As a mom of 4 children, all of whom were born at full term, I will never know the fear many mothers face by bringing a premature baby into this world. I do know however, that I would want to ensure that my baby has the very best start in life, with the least risk of complications. It is because of this that I have partnered with Prolacta Bioscience to help raise awareness. I’ve gathered some very important information regarding preterm infants, including facts about human milk fortifiers, which are crucial to the health of premies.

Here are a few facts about preterm infants according to The World Health Organization:

15 million preterm babies are born annually worldwide.

Most preterm babies survive but many face a lifetime of disability, including learning disabilities, visual & hearing problems.

Most preterm births happen spontaneously.

Common causes of preterm births include, multiple pregnancies, infections, diabetes and high blood pressure but often no cause is identified.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, I urge you to read this post and become educated about the 2 types of premie milk fortifiers that are available. Preterm infants are not able to breastfeed after birth. Their tiny bodies require 20-40% more calories and protein than full term babies, due to missing out on their 3rd trimester in utero. Most hospitals use what is called a “human milk fortifier” but it is actually cows milk based. This is hugely disappointing for most vegan parents.

Early nutritional support is crucial for preterm infants and human milk fortifiers made from cows milk are inferior to human milk fortifiers. Prolacta Bioscience is the only human milk fortifier made from 100% human breastmilk, making it completely vegan. It is available at no extra cost to the parents and is FDA approved. The donor breastmilk used to create this fortifier is heavily screened and tested and is extremely safe. If you are thinking that a 100% human milk fortifier is not important, please consider this:

Cows milk fortifiers are known to cause feeding intolerance along with severe complications including sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a leading cause of premature infant death.

Prolacta Bioscience human milk fortifier has been clinically proven to improve the health and size of premies as well as reducing complications and allowing parents to bring their babies home sooner.

The American Academy Of Pediatrics recommends adding a human milk fortifier to mother’s breast milk or donor milk for premies weighing 2.2 pounds or less yet surprisingly, milk fortification is often delayed for weeks due to the risk of feeding intolerance caused by cows milk. This is truly a shame because delaying human milk fortifier undermines brain and lung development, as well as weight and length gains. Prolacta milk fortifier is safe to use during a premies first days of life and makes a huge difference in the health of premature infants.

Please, if you or a loved one is faced with the experience of delivering a preterm infant, ask your hospital or care team for Prolacta Bioscience human milk fortifier by name. This may be one of the most important decisions you make for your precious baby. I urge you to click this link and head to www.prolacta.com to learn more about Prolacta human milk fortifier.
